![]() Welcome to Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer
organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of the German Shepherd
Dog. We provide a safe haven for German Shepherds (and, sometimes, other breeds/mixes)
who are left in shelters to await uncertain fate; are owner surrenders (moving, illness, divorce,
death, etc.); or are victims of abuse or neglect. We adopt dogs to loving, responsible and
secure homes, typically, in Virginia and the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. VGSR has
found homes for over 3,100 deserving dogs, 342 in 2010 alone. We receive our funding
from private donations and adoption fees.
Current Events - Adoption Day - How to Adopt
An Adoption Day provides a wonderful opportunity to meet many of VGSR’s great German Shepherds who are looking for loving forever homes! VGSR volunteers are happy to help you find the best match for your family and answer any questions you may have on our wonderful foster dogs. If you are just beginning to think about adopting; have completed an adoption application; or just want to learn more about our terrific breed, please come and visit us at an Adoption event. Please remember that different dogs attend different adoption days, so check the Current Events page of our website for a list of dates, locations and dogs who will be attending the event. Try to attend several events and meet various dogs as each dog has his/her own unique personality. For more information on VGSR’s adoption process, please see Required Forms. We look forward to seeing you!

Emergency Care Needed
Eva was born with a condition called megaesophagus that causes her to regurgitate all of her food after eating. Although Eva is doing okay with her feeding regimen, she should be keeping her food down and gaining weight better than she is. Eva has an appointment at Va. Tech vet school in January for more specific blood work, scoping of her esophagus, and swallowing tests. We are hoping that this will enable us to fine tune her eating plan so that she gets maximum benefit from her nutrition. In spite of her condition, this spunky little girl has so much puppy energy, love, and the will to live. We are seeking donations to help defray the cost of this visit!
Can you help us help her?
Any amount will make a big difference. Checks may be sent to our PO Box with a notation for "Eva." You may also use the donation link under her write up in “Available Dogs.” Click on her picture and there is a link at the bottom of her write-up for donations. Check out her Facebook link too! Thank you. ![]() Volunteer Foster Homes - Urgent
We have a number of good German Shepherds that are still
waiting in local shelters for a good foster home.
Please consider opening your home to one of these companion
animals. See "Required Forms" for a foster application.
DID YOU KNOW?
VGSR has three specialized Funds described below to help dogs with unique needs:
Ginger's Fund Ginger's Fund was created in memory of Sheila G., a long-time VGSR volunteer. This fund, named after one of Sheila's favorite fosters, is used specifically to help some of the old, the sick or the special needs dogs who come into VGSR’s care. As you would expect, these dogs may require extended stays in foster care until they are ready for adoption and have higher medical and rehabilitative costs.
Josie's Fund Josie's fund, created in memory of one of our founder's first GSD, provides financial assistance for the care of pets whose owners, because of special circumstances, are unable to afford the expense (i.e. spay/neuter; food; medical care; boarding). Examples of support this fund has provided include helping when short term support was needed due to job/income loss; assisting when a divorce and temporary move necessitated boarding the dog; supporting a woman who was forced to move to a shelter and providing for the dog until she was back on her feet; or providing for a dog when a family was having a major medical issue and needed help paying for dog walkers, etc.
Canine Medical Advocacy Fund The Canine Medical Advocacy Fund was recently established to support special needs dogs who have been medically and/or physically neglected. More details regarding this fund are available on VGSR’s Facebook Cause page (http://apps.facebook.com/causes/457882/113460657?m=9e4cc0c7&ref=mf) If you would like to donate to one or more of these very worthy funds, please be sure to indicate the Fund’s name (Ginger, Josie or Canine Medical Advocacy Fund) somewhere on your donation. Contributions may be mailed to our P.O. Box (P.O. Box 126, Sterling, Virginia 20167) or submitted through Paypal (please see our donation page)
or, for the Medical Advocacy Fund, through our Facebook Cause page. On behalf of all our volunteers and the many
dogs who will be helped by your donation, thank you so much.
Please consider helping our foster dogs with the
donation of a Kuranda bed. Please click on link below;
